Excited about growing your own food but wondering how to keep your pets safe? You've come to the right place!

Many of us love the idea of having our own garden, whether it's in our backyards, balconies, or kitchen counters. But, it's important to be aware of certain plants that can be harmful for our pets.

Grapes

Delicious for us, but they can harm the kidneys of dogs and cats. To grow grapes safely, put a barrier around the vines and where the fruit might fall.

Nightshades (Tomatoes & Potatoes)

These plants contain toxins in their leaves and stems. To keep your pets safe, grow them in raised garden beds like this one or containers that are out of reach.

Herbs

Most herbs won't attract pets but if you have a chewer, be cautious with some like peppermint. It can cause tummy issues if they eat too much. Plant your herbs in spots your pets can't reach, or opt for pet-friendly options like parsley or basil.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is soothing for us, but the latex in its leaves can cause tummy problems for pets. Grow aloe vera in a spot your pets can't easily get to it.

Onions, Garlic, Leeks & Chives

These plants are seriously harmful to pets, especially if they eat a lot at once or over time. It's important to keep them away from your pets at all costs.

Simple precautions like barriers, choosing safe alternatives, and keeping harmful plants out of reach allow you to have a thriving garden while keeping your beloved pets safe. If you're unsure about any plants, we recommend speaking to your vet and always research the plants you're growing to keep your pets healthy.
