Classic Aussie Burger

Build your own adventure with a Classic Aussie Burger, using fresh and easy-to-grow ingredients from your patch like lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Serves 1, multiply quantities as needed
Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 100-150gms minced beef
  • 1 Tomato, sliced
  • 1-2 leaves butter lettuce
  • 1 small red onion
  • 2 pineapple rings, canned or fresh
  • 2-3 slices of beetroot, canned or pickled
  • 2 slices of free-range bacon
  • 2 slices Tasty or Cheddar cheese
  • 1 free-range egg
  • Tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Burger bun

Method:

In a bowl add meat, salt, and pepper to taste and lightly mix, shape into a a round and flat burger patty, noting to make the patty slightly larger than the bun as it will shrink through cooking.

Wash and slice tomatoes and lettuce. Then slice onion into rings, rinse under cold water, and pat dry. Drain pineapple and beetroot and pat dry, set aside.

In a hot frying pan add a tablespoon of olive oil and add the meat patty. Cook until browned on one side, then flip for an extra minute or so. When cooked remove and set aside.

In the same hot pan, add the bacon and egg and cook to your liking. Remove and set aside.

Toast buns until just warmed through.

There is no rule to building a burger aside from keeping hot items together. Start with sauce on the bottom bun, add lettuce, tomato, onion, pineapple, beetroot, then bacon, meat patty cheese, and egg. Finish with extra sauce on the top bun.

Notes:

  • There is no need to add anything additional to your meat aside from salt and pepper, do not overwork the meat as this will make it tougher through the cooking process
  • Swap meat for a portobello mushroom or tofu for a vegetarian option
  • You can melt the cheese directly on the burger patty just before removing it from the pan.

Happy cooking!
